Giving unachievable goals or deadlines. Once employees realize they won’t be able to get something done, they’ll think “I’m going to fail”, as this was how I felt when having to mentor a student nurse. Mary was obsessed with what was part of my job description – mentoring student nurses. Yet throughout my years in nursing I have known of qualified staff who have never mentored a student nurse and would avoid students. However, I felt it difficult to say no and Mary also said it was difficult to make special circumstances for me.

Implied threats. To be honest I felt threatened when asked to move to another area for a month, as new staff nurses were being brought in for six month placements. Then, in November 2010, when it was stated I should be working somewhere else, I was made to feel unwanted, paranoid and wanting to work somewhere else. This was further not helped by being told about concerns needing to be highlighted in the event of my manager writing a reference.

Not honouring creative thinking and problem solving. When employees take initiative to improve something, there still should be some support. While I had ideas of what to do for the Spirituality Group, I lacked some of the ideas on how to go about promoting it successfully. Being autistic I did not have the imagination to ask relevant questions or advice when asking for support. When I gave a presentation on spirituality to the acute ward, the room was disorganized and I did not get enough time to properly set up, and as a result my presentation was a flop, which was immediately reported back to my manager. So I state the importance of support for someone with autism, especially where it involves a creative project.
